On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at approximately 10:25 the Cahaba Valley Fire District was dispatched on two calls simultaneously.
The first was an appliance fire in a residential structure in the Mt Laurel community. Immediately after dispatch a second medical call was dispatched at the intersection of Hwy 280 and Narrows Pkwy. Two units diverted to the medical call. The appliance fire was quickly updated to a residential structure fire. Crews from Cahaba Valley Fire, Chelsea Fire, & Hoover Fire responded to the structure. Thank you to our neighboring departments for the help.
Within seven minutes of dispatch the first arriving crews initiated fire attack and ensured that all residents were clear of the structure. There were no civilian injuries.
Crews encountered high heat and dense smoke that led to three firefighters becoming disoriented. A MAYDAY was called to initiate the rescue efforts of those firefighters. The firefighters were able to quickly evacuate themselves from various windows. There were no firefighter injuries.
Crews regrouped and continued fire attack and extinguished the fire. There was substantial fire damage to the kitchen, garage, and rear of the structure as well as smoke damage throughout.
Because the Mt Laurel community homes are built with very little spacing between structures, fire spread to other structures is always a concern. The crews were able to stop the fire spread throughout the entire structure and prevent the fire from spreading to those other nearby homes.
Shelby County Emergency Management (EMA) responded to coordinate aid from Red Cross for the homeowner.
In addition, Cahaba Valley Fire was dispatched on two other medical calls while simultaneously working the structure fire.
