We are back with a perfect weekend tourist destination in North Bengal:
Jhalong
Bindu
Murti
Chapramari Forest
Jhalong is a small village situated on the banks of river Jaldhaka near India-Bhutan border in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal.
The serene ambience and the scenic beauty makes it a favoured off beat destination.
Bindu is the last village of West Bengal. The main point of attraction is the Jaldhaka dam which also acts as a bridge for crossing over to Bhutan and is one of the oldest hydro-electric projects in India.
We travelled from Alipurduar (which happens to be my in-laws place) to Jhalong - a distance of 130 kms which took us around 3 hours to cover.
It was a 1 night 2 days trip and we stayed at RJ Homestay in Jhalong - one of the best places to stay there. The tariff was Rs. 1250 per day per head - which included breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner.
We started in the morning by 9 and via Chapramari forest proceeded towards Jhalong. The roads and the view were awesome. On the way, we had our breakfast and reached there around noon.
The view was mesmerising. We were at the edge of India, the Jaldhaka river acts as the international border and the hill next to it is actually a part of Bhutan.
We had our lunch at the homestay and chilled a bit on the lawn on the banks of Jaldhaka river.
In the afternoon around 4, we started for Bindu, which is an uphill drive with lots of sharp turns and bends. Bindu is 10 kms from Jhalong and it took 30 mins to reach. There you can find a small market (popularly called as Bhutan market) where you can buy souvenirs and chocolates. There is the Jaldhaka dam but entry is restricted for general public.
Since it was a hilly drive, we stayed there for some time and returned back before sunset and found that the evening snacks were ready and waiting for us.
Post which we roamed in the village but since there was nothing much to do in the dark, we had our dinner and went to sleep.
Next morning we checked out after having our breakfast and went to Murti riverside. Spending some time there we returned back via Gorumara National Park.
