At Norway’s Railway Museum, a 160-year-old locomotive still roars to life.
History isn't just remembered — it's ridden.
Hop aboard!
Hidden in the heart of Norway, the Norwegian Railway Museum is home to a breathtaking wonder: one of the world's oldest and most beautifully preserved operational vintage trains.
A dream that sparked in 1988, when the Friends of the Railway Museum dared to imagine breathing life back into a sleeping giant, became reality after six years of love and labor.
In the spring of 1996, just as the museum marked its 100th anniversary, the legendary locomotive "Caroline" — born in 1861, built by Robert Stephenson and Co. in Newcastle, England — roared back to life, steaming proudly into a new century.
Since then, this magnificent iron beauty has stolen the spotlight, journeying two to four times a year between Hamar and Elverum, and occasionally stretching its wings to far-off destinations like Kongsvinger, Flisa, Lillestrøm, and even Gävle in Sweden.
Though Caroline’s top speed is a modest 60 km/h — achievable mostly downhill — nothing can slow down the spirit of adventure she carries.
Her grand procession, including the locomotive, a goods wagon, and six gleaming carriages, stretches a glorious 70 meters — a moving monument to an era when railways ruled the world.
