Mathew: 25:40 “In so far as you did this to one of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.”
God in flesh and blood
The least are the greatest / We rub shoulders with God / Jesus identifies Himself with us
We all try to get VVIPs for the function we consider important. The more important the VIP, the greater our sense of achievement and satisfaction. As far as Jesus is concerned his VIPs are the hungry, the thirsty, the homeless, the naked, the sick and the prisoner. He identifies Himself, completely and forever, with the "least." He does not only dwell in tabernacles of stone, but in living tabernacles of flesh and blood.
Who are the least? They are the hungry, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned. They are the ones society steps over; the ones we train our eyes to avoid. They are the inconvenient, the demanding, the ones who can offer us nothing in return. And Christ says, "I am there."
This changes everything. When we offer a meal to the hungry, we are not merely providing calories; we are feeding the Lord. When we listen to the lonely, we are not just passing time; we are keeping company with our King. The grumpy neighbour, the irritating co-worker, the homeless person on the corner—each is a masked Christ, waiting to see if we will recognize Him.
The measure of our love for the God we cannot see is made visible in our love for the neighbour we can. It is not about grand gestures, but the daily, small fidelity of seeing His face in the forgotten. For what we do for them, we do for Him. Let us go forth and seek Him, not in the clouds, but in the faces of the least. Amen.
