Fabijan Merdić - Bagpipes (gajde)
Fabijan Merdić is a young bagpipe player from Osijek. His repertoire includes songs and melodies originating from the rich culture of Slavonija and Baranja, which he performs with great respect for authenticity and tradition.
Baranja is a region in northeastern Croatia, located between the Drava River and the borders with Hungary and Serbia. It belongs to Osijek-Baranja county and is known for its rich history, traditions and picturesque landscapes. It is an agricultural area, with dominant grape and grain crops and animal husbandry. Baranja is a region that is home to representatives of various ethnic groups, including Croats, Serbs, Hungarians and Roma and German minorities. The influence of different cultures is evident in traditions, language and cuisine. Baranja is known for its folklore, including traditional folk costumes, handicrafts and customs that are cultivated in the region's villages and towns.
Slavonia, a region in northeastern Croatia, is famous for its rich musical and ethnographic tradition. The most important instruments for Slavonian music are the bagpipes (gajde) and the tamburica, which give an energetic, dance-like character to local melodies, often performed in polyphony. Slavonia is distinguished by its rich, colorful, hand-embroidered folk costumes, unique to individual villages and towns. The region is famous for its folklore festivals, such as Đakovački vezovi in Đakovo and Bablje ljeto in Donji Andrijevci, which attract lovers of Croatian culture and traditions.
Gajde (bagpipes) are very old musical instruments, found in various varieties throughout Western, Central and Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. The bagpipes as we know them today are derived from simpler instruments such as diple. The main differences between gajde and diple are the arrangement of the holes, the addition of a horn on the melodic pipe and the bourdon sound. It is the bourdon that is the distinctive feature of the bagpipes, distinguishing them from other instruments with bellows. It is assumed that the current form of bagpipes that can be found in Croatia was created around the 12th-13th centuries. Bagpipes from the territory of Slavonija and Baranja resemble medieval bagpipes in their construction. They have a single melodic reed and a bourdon reed.
