Mount Willingdon & Crown Peak
August 29-30-31, 2025
Mount Willingdon is a 11,067-foot (3,373 m) mountain in Banff National Park, Alberta, located along the Icefields Parkway
Crown Peak is the unofficial name for "Willingdon Center," 11,007-foot (3,337 meters)a sub-peak of Mount Willingdon in the Canadian Rockies, located in Banff National Park, Alberta.
After doing mountains back to back, it was time to slow things down and spend some time with my wife. I’d been saving these two 11,000ers to do together with her. My knee was still in recovery mode, so the plan was a 3-day adventure at a slow to moderate pace — no rush whatsoever.
Day 1
From Calgary, it’s about a 2-hour drive to Mosquito Creek Campground. From there, we hiked roughly 4 km up the Mosquito Creek Trail to Quartzite Col — the crux of the approach, steep and loose. After descending into the Siffleur Valley, the trail opened up into wide grassy plains and beautiful meadows. We eventually reached Devon Lakes campsite, where we had a perfect view of the next day’s objectives — Mount Willingdon and Crown Peak.
Day 2
We started at 5 a.m., heading up Willingdon’s west ridge. It began as a gentle slope but quickly turned into steep scree, making the final push to the summit a grind. From there, we dropped down into the valley and traversed across loose terrain toward Crown Peak. It was physically demanding and that classic “technical scree” kind of stuff if you know what I mean. Reaching the summit felt awesome, and we descended the same way back to camp.
Day 3
We retraced our steps all the way back to the Mosquito Creek parking lot, wrapping up a solid and memorable 3-day trip together.
