On October 17, 1980, 23-year-old Claire Hartley finished her bartending shift at Dempsey's Bar in Van Nuys, California. She kissed her two young daughters goodbye that afternoon, promising to take them to the beach on Sunday. She never came home.

Her body was found on Highway 395 outside Ridgecrest—strangled and abandoned in the Mojave Desert. For 43 years, her killer's identity remained unknown. Emma and Amy grew up without their mother, raised by their grandmother who died in 2016 never knowing the truth.

Then in 2024, genetic genealogy changed everything. DNA preserved under Claire's fingernails—evidence she'd fought back—finally revealed her killer's name: David Brennan, a Navy electronics technician stationed at China Lake Naval Weapons Center.

But Brennan had died in 2020, four years before he was identified. There would be no trial. No traditional justice. Just answers that came decades too late.
