Important Changes to Sani Pass Day Tours from Durban

I have some important news to share about the "highest pub in Africa" that many people want to visit when booking a Sani Pass day trip from Durban.

Up until recently the Sani Pub was happy for visitors to stop by for lunch and/or a drink at bar. Now this wasn't a problem until the pub became popular and more and more tourists and locals began to frequent the pub. On some weekend days, there could be over a hundred. people for lunch.

The issue with so many people at the pub, it wait times for meals began to stretch, with some only getting their lunch order 90min later or even 2 hours. This naturally led to tensions, even some bad reviews.

The Sani Pub is in a remote spot at the top of the Sani Pass and they have a small kitchen, so it's really unfair they they bore the brunt of annoyed customers because two tours busses rocked up unannounced!

The pub had now come up with a solution that is better for them, but does make a little more challenging for the tour operators. From this month (Feb '26) onwards, in order to visit the pub for lunch, a reservation will need to be made.

On top of this new reservation system, you can only make a reservation in the month in which you wish to visit the pub; so you will not be able to make a booking for March while in Feb. Bookings open on the 1st of the month only.

Further to this, the pub is only allowing 40 visitors per day; again it's a small pub in a remote location. Weekends tend to be busier so bookings do fill up quickly.

Reservations will need to accompanied by a R200 redeemable pre-payment as well - this is too prevent bookings made but no arrival. You (or I in the case of guests) will make you reservation and then pay the R200 for the reservation.

What this all means is that no longer am I or any tour operator for that matter, able to promise a lunch at Africa's highest pub.

For the most part though, 80% of bookings wont be effected, especially those during the week. But weekends may be challenging.

So these are the new rules that came into effect this month and time will tell how effective they are. So far I've managed to book every gust into the pub except 2 people that booked the night before, so unless it's the South African high season, probably 90% of everyone that wants to get to the pub, will.
