Pipkins aired at a time when Britain needed to compete with America’s children’s TV juggernaut Sesame Street. Not everyone outside of Britain may know about it because it never produced toys or other merchandise. The show followed a puppeteer. The puppets he created all had unique personalities and accents.

When the actor playing the main human character died, they eventually had to address it. The show had a frank discussion on air about death. This was years before Sesame Street would do the same.

Pipkins wasn’t afraid to broach difficult subjects. That was the one thing that didn’t change throughout the years. The goal was always to encourage important discussions instead of pushing them aside. Many other aspects of the show changed over time. Its characters and sets got switched many times.

Network restructuring eventually led to its cancellation in the 80s. A new show, Let’s Pretend, came in to fill its place in the children’s show slot. Fans needed to be avid viewers if they wanted to catch every episode. Its major puppeteer was an avid technology nerd, but his tech wasn’t able to preserve many of the episodes. Most are gone or only available as audio recordings.

That may be part of why Pipkins got a spiritual successor in the 20th century. Monty & Co brings many members of the original crew back together. It has a cleaner image but the same heart. All the episodes are available on the BBC iPlayer. They’ll hopefully be a positive influence on children for generations to come.
