Introduction

As an automotive technician, I've faced complex vehicle issues, but the Citroën Dispatch with persistent additive tank faults has been particularly challenging. In this post, I'll outline the process I followed to diagnose and address the problems with this van, including the installation of a new additive tank and subsequent troubleshooting efforts.

Diagnosing the Initial Issues

The Citroën Dispatch had 144,000 miles on the odometer, equipped with a 2-liter engine and automatic transmission. Upon starting, it beeped loudly, indicating several fault codes.

Connecting the diagnostic tool revealed the engine fault light and the need for "Engine FA Repair." The following issues were identified:

B2EB0 - Additive Tank: Problem with the additive tank, critical for the diesel particulate filter (DPF) system.
P2463 - Diesel Particulate Filter Soot Accumulation: DPF was likely clogged due to the additive tank issue.
P246C - Particulate Filter Restriction: Confirmed DPF restriction, leading to performance issues.
P242F - Maximum Additive Threshold in the DPF: Additive level had reached its maximum threshold.
P1434 - Multiplexed Additive Tank Pump Fault: Potential issue with the additive tank pump.

It was clear the primary issue centered around the additive tank and its integration with the DPF system. The customer had visited the Citroën dealership multiple times without resolution.

Replacing the Additive Tank

The dealership replaced the additive tank, but the fault codes persisted, indicating the problem was not just a faulty tank. I examined the tank and found the power supply and signal connections were functioning correctly. The vehicle struggled to program and integrate the new additive tank.

Disabling the Additive Tank

To address the persistent fault, I decided to disable the additive tank functionality. I accessed the vehicle's BSI (Body and Security Interface) and changed the additive tank setting to "Absent," allowing me to clear the related fault codes.

Disabling the additive tank is not a long-term solution, as it can affect the DPF system's functioning. However, it was necessary to get the vehicle back on the road while exploring permanent fixes.

Addressing the DPF Fault

With the additive tank fault cleared, I focused on the DPF fault. The diagnostic data showed high DPF pressure, indicating a blockage. I performed a DPF cleaning procedure using a specialized kit:

Disconnected the DPF from the exhaust system.
Attached the cleaning fluid hose and sprayed the solution into the DPF.
Allowed the solution to soak, then started the engine at 3,000 RPM.
Monitored the DPF pressure until it dropped to the desired range of 2-5 mbar.

After cleaning, the pressure readings dropped, indicating effective cleaning. I cleared the DPF-related fault codes and performed a test drive.

Addressing the Remaining Faults

With the DPF issue resolved, I checked the remaining fault codes, including the P1434 code for the additive tank pump fault. I verified the power supply and pump operation. Since I had disabled the additive tank functionality, the P1434 code was no longer relevant and could be cleared.

I also reset the oil service warning light to ensure timely oil change reminders for the customer.

Verifying the Repair and Providing Recommendations

With all fault codes cleared and the DPF system functioning correctly, I test drove the Citroën Dispatch, monitoring the engine management light and DPF pressure readings, which were normal.

However, I advised the customer to work with the Citroën dealership for a permanent fix for the additive tank issue, as it is essential for emissions compliance. I recommended monitoring the DPF system and addressing any new issues promptly.

Conclusion

The Citroën Dispatch case was challenging, but through a methodical approach, I got the vehicle back on the road temporarily. While disabling the additive tank was not ideal, it allowed the customer to continue using the vehicle while seeking a permanent solution. This experience highlights the importance of persistence and exploring alternative solutions in complex vehicle problems.
