The Dell Precision R7920 supports four primary types of drives, two types of HDD and two types of SSD. For the HDDs you have SATA and SAS drives, same goes for your SSD’s. The speed of your drives depends on the type of drive you choose, HDD SATA drives offer speed options of 7.2K. HDD SAS drives are available with a maximum speed of 7.2K, 10K, or 15K, now if you want the best performance for your hard drive we suggest using SSDs. For a SSD SATA you can get a max speed of 6GB/s. With an SSD SAS you’ll achieve a high speed of 12 GB/s. The R7920 accommodates a variety of drive sizes, ranging from 1.92TB to a maximum capacity of 20TB. The Dell Precision R7920 provides flexibility in drive choices, and we encourage users to share their experiences and findings with different drive capacities in the comments below.

The max size drives for your R7920 server will depend on the 8-BAY LFF chassis. For NVMe, you can only use it with the M.2 slots and PCIe slots in the server, however it will limit the amount of GPU’s you can install. A SATA SSD will max out at 7.68TB while the SAS SSD can max out with 15.36TB, however if you plan to use a SAS drive it does require a RAID card and cabling to fully utilize the drive. A 3.5” SATA HDD and a 3.5” SAS HDD will offer more storage for scalability reaching 20TB for both drive maxes.

Whether you opt for SAS, SATA, or NVMe drives, the hot-swap feature allows you to add or replace drives while the server is operational. In our upcoming tutorials, we'll guide you through the process of installing new drives into your R7920 and provide insights into testing drive performance using tools like Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel.
