360 Degree Liposuction | Belly Fat Removal Before & After | How Much Fat Can Liposuction Remove?
When it comes to body contouring, one of the most common questions patients ask is: “Am I the right candidate for liposuction?” In this video, Dr. Ankit Gupta breaks down a simple, practical way for you to understand whether the fat in your belly area is the type that can be effectively treated through liposuction.
Many people are often confused about the difference between extra-abdominal (subcutaneous) fat and intra-abdominal (visceral) fat. This difference is extremely important because it directly impacts whether liposuction is suitable for you. Liposuction can safely and effectively remove the fat that lies outside your muscles — the pinchable fat under the skin that you can hold in your hand. However, liposuction cannot remove visceral fat, which lies deep inside your abdomen around the internal organs. That type of fat is managed best with diet, exercise, and sometimes medical treatments.
So how do you figure this out at home? There are two simple checks you can do:
The Belly Button Test – Insert your pinky finger gently into your belly button and notice how deep it goes. The depth mostly reflects how much extra-abdominal fat is present, which is the kind that can be reduced with liposuction.
The Pinch Test – Try sucking in your tummy, tightening your abdominal muscles, and then check how much fat you can pinch outside the muscles. The fat you can grab is the fat liposuction can remove. If you can hold a significant amount, you may be a good candidate for tummy liposuction. If there’s very little you can pinch but your belly still looks round, that usually means you have more visceral fat, which liposuction cannot target.
This video focuses on explaining these basic yet powerful concepts so you can better understand whether liposuction will meet your expectations. Many people think liposuction is about weight loss, but that’s a misconception. Liposuction is not designed for overall weight reduction — instead, it’s a body contouring surgery. It helps reshape specific areas where stubborn fat deposits don’t go away with diet and exercise.
For example, you may have noticed that some people are generally slim but carry most of their fat in one specific area, like the tummy, flanks, or thighs. This happens because of a higher number of fat cells in that area, and no matter how hard they try, the fat doesn’t budge. Liposuction is perfect for such cases because it permanently removes those fat cells and restores balance to the body shape.
But if your tummy bulge is due to fat stored deep inside the abdominal cavity (visceral fat), no surgical procedure can directly remove it. In that case, lifestyle changes, medical weight-loss options, or bariatric surgery may be more appropriate. This is why it’s so important to distinguish between the two types of fat before making any decision.
Liposuction of the tummy, also called abdominal liposuction, is a safe and commonly performed procedure when done on the right patient. The process typically involves creating tiny, almost invisible cuts through which a special fluid is introduced to numb the area and reduce bleeding. Advanced technologies like VASER (ultrasound-assisted liposuction) may be used to break down fat more effectively. The loosened fat is then gently suctioned out, leaving the area flatter, more contoured, and proportional to the rest of your body.
Recovery from liposuction is relatively quick compared to other major surgeries. Most patients can walk the same day, resume light activities in a few days, and get back to work within a week (depending on the extent of liposuction). Swelling and bruising are temporary, and results keep improving over several weeks to months as the body heals and contracts.
The results of liposuction are considered long-lasting because the fat cells removed do not grow back. However, maintaining a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise is crucial to preserve the outcome. If you gain significant weight after liposuction, the fat will be stored in other areas of the body.
