QUESTION:
(a) The triple-point of water is a standard fixed point in a modern thermometer. Why? What is wrong with taking the melting point of ice and the boiling point of water as standard fixed points?
(b) On the absolute (Kelvin) scale, one fixed point is the triple-point of water at 273.16 K. What is the other fixed point?
(c) Why is the relation between Celsius and Kelvin scales written as tᶜ = T – 273.15 and not 273.16?
(d) What is the temperature of the triple-point of water on an absolute scale whose unit interval is the same as the Fahrenheit scale?
This session focuses on understanding fixed points of temperature scales, the importance of the triple-point of water, and the conceptual differences between Celsius, Kelvin, and Fahrenheit scales so that students can confidently answer theory-based questions in exams.
