QUESTION:
Two ideal gas thermometers, A and B, use oxygen and hydrogen respectively. Pressure readings are taken at the triple-point of water and the normal melting point of sulphur.
(a) What is the absolute temperature of the normal melting point of sulphur as read by thermometers A and B?
(b) Why is there a slight difference between the readings of thermometers A and B? What further procedure is required to reduce this discrepancy?
This session focuses on understanding the working principle of an ideal gas thermometer, applying pressure–temperature relations correctly, and analysing why different gases give slightly different readings so that students can confidently handle conceptual as well as numerical questions in exams.
