Beneath a demolished Napoleonic fort, a hidden network of tunnels still survives underground — and this video explores the first of two separate tunnel systems.
The fort itself was dismantled in the 1960s, leaving almost nothing visible above ground. What remains is buried, forgotten, and difficult to access, but beneath the surface these tunnels still reveal traces of a much older military site.
In this video, I locate and access the first set of surviving tunnels beneath the site of a Napoleonic-era coastal fort. With the surface structures long gone, finding a way in is far from straightforward, involving hidden entrances, unstable ground, and areas that have remained unseen for decades.
These underground spaces once formed part of a fortification built during the Napoleonic period to defend the coast. Although the fort above ground no longer exists, its tunnels were never fully removed, leaving behind a rare and largely overlooked part of Britain’s military history.
This is Part 1 of 2, focusing on the first tunnel system beneath the fort. A second video will follow, exploring the other surviving tunnels, which differ in layout, condition, and purpose.
Safety note:
This video documents exploration of abandoned military remains. No damage was caused, and no locations are disclosed.
