A Victorian masterpiece is facing destruction, and may be just the beginning of a multi-million-pound national scandal.
Deep beneath the Yorkshire landscape lies Queensbury Tunnel, a 1.4-mile marvel of 19th-century railway engineering completed in 1878. But today, this historic site is the centre of a bitter battle. National Highways, the government company responsible for over 3,000 of Britain's legacy railway structures, wants to spend £7.5 million of public money to permanently abandon it.
But the fight isn't over yet.
In this video, I explore the reality of Queensbury Tunnel, the controversial use of "Class Q" emergency legislation, and the bizarre history of the Musgrave Bridge infilling. I also chat with Norah from the Queensbury Tunnel Society, who has a completely different vision: saving this incredible piece of history and reopening it as a sprawling active travel greenway connecting Halifax, Bradford, and Keighley.
🛑 How You Can Help Save Queensbury Tunnel
The campaign relies entirely on people power to stop the permanent closure. There is still time to act before National Highways submits their final planning application to Bradford Council: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tel...
