Portimão's Unforgettable Contrast: Anchor Graveyard, Doll Cave, and the Algarve's Cliffside Beauty

​Part 2 of our Portimão adventure as we explore the incredible contrasts of the Algarve! We start at the mesmerizing Cemitério das âncoras (Anchor Cemetery) on Praia do Barril, a vast, open-air monument to the region's fishing history ⚓️.

​Then, we trade the history books for natural beauty as we hike the stunning coastal cliffs to find the breathtaking Boneca Cave (Doll Cave) 🧜‍♀️ and walk the scenic Passadiços da Ponta da Piedade 🚶‍♀️.

​We cap it off by trying the local favorite, authentic Portuguese Peri-Peri Chicken at O Recife Churrasqueira 🍗🌶️!



Portimão #2 (Travel Log):
After another hearty hotel breakfast, we headed out to the Anchor Cemetary. But first a stop at the Porto Recreio de Olhão ( Olhão Marina). Unfortunately we weren’t on the right day or time, but it was beautiful and a nice place to stretch our legs.

Next, it was on to the Cemitério das Âncoras. It was a 25-minute walk to get to the Praia do Barril (Barril Beach) where the cemetery was located. They do offer a train ride, but we were ready to walk and enjoy the scenery on foot. The small beach area is geared toward tourists, and the number of anchors in the cemetery was astounding. After wandering the property, reading about its history and gazing at the anchors, we stopped for a bite to eat and a drink at the Museu do Atum (Tuna Museum).
All of that walking earned us a train ride back. We got the front seat (actually the back, the train went in reverse on the way out) which gave us awesome views of the marsh lands. The next stop on our agenda was the street art-pintura grafiti mural (graffiti mural painting). It was impressive to see an entire building covered in street art.

We learned that the O Recife Churrasqueira (The barbeque reef) had some great Prii Piri Chicken, so of course we had to stop by and try some. A quick to-go order and we were pretty much done for the day. After a little rest up, we headed back out to the La Dolce Vita (yes it was that good that we went twice) and brought back dinner.

The next day brought us to the Boneca Cave also known as the Boneca tidal oven. Boneca means Doll in Portuguese. We left early so we really did not have any other tourist traffic in the beginning. We had the walkway down the coastal cliffs pretty much to ourselves and the views were stunning.

After the caves we went to the Passadiços da Ponta da Piedade (Ponta da Peidade walkways). It is awesome to be able to walk easily on the walkways and still enjoy spectacular views. We definitely got our steps in. Back in Portimao, we had lunch at Dona Barca, and of course wine. We love to walk the back streets and get up close with the real city.

One more round of laundry and one last walk on our beach (Praia da Rocha), which thanks to the weather, we had it almost all to ourselves. The sunset was beautiful and the seagull kept us entertained for quite a while.

Then another early start to get going on the last leg of our trip. Next is Evora & Setubal.
