Panel with Cherie Hu, Jean-Hugues Kabuiku, Trevor McFedries
Moderators: Caroline Busta & Lil Internet
The pandemic has ground global economies to a halt, including the already frail ecosystems of independent music and related creative industries. While in-person congregation and cross-border movement once enabled the diversification of income streams, these dependencies also detracted from the need to grapple with the chronic inequality and unsustainability embedded in creative industries’ technological and infrastructural frameworks. Before any supposed »returns to normalcy« – and thus returns to economically and ecologically damaging models – perhaps we ought to collectively consider what more equitable and sustainable systems might look like. Can new configurations offer paths towards sustainable revenue streams? How could they be designed to challenge and change economic divides and power structures codified by a colonial past and its resulting inequalities?
»Possible Futures of Creative Valuation« brings together a number of creators, musicians, writers, and researchers to think through these entanglements. Cherie Hu is a journalist and researcher covering all things related to music, technology, and business, perhaps best known for her independent newsletter Water & Music. Trevor McFedries is the Brud co-founder and Lil Miquela co-instigator, as well as former DJ, producer, and director. Jean-Hugues Kabuiku is a developer, musician, and writer, with bylines in Resident Advisor and Mixmag. They appear in conversation with Caroline Busta and LILINTERNET, co-founders of the New Models podcast and platform.
Recorded live in Berlin at studio dB on 22 January 2021.
