Programme:
00:00 - »Swirling Qubits« by Eduardo Reck Miranda & performed by Federico Visi
12:06 - »Rever« by Paulo Itaborai and Dino Vicente
25:33 - »Hexagonal Chambers« by Pete Thomas and Paulo Itaborai
38:02 - »Mind the Qubits« by Colin Harrington and Eduardo Reck Miranda
Eduardo Reck Miranda led a concert of Quantum Computer Music showcasing pioneering systems and performances developed by his team at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR), Plymouth, UK.
A quantum computer deals with information encoded as quantum bits – or qubits. The qubit is to a quantum computer what a bit is to a digital one: it is a basic unit of information. In hardware, qubits live in the subatomic world. They are subject to the laws of quantum mechanics. Thus, qubits process information in fundamentally different and potentially more powerful ways than digital bits. Quantum computing is bound to open new and exciting opportunities for creative practices.
For the performance, a state-of-the-art quantum computer, developed by IQM, was used to run generative music algorithms and to synthesise sounds. Performers controlled the quantum computer based in Finland with gestures, brain signals and live coding through the Internet. Vintage analogue synthesisers in Brazil produced sounds transmitted to Berlin in real-time.
Programme
› Swirling Qubits by Eduardo Reck Miranda
Piece for Q1Synth synthesisers and wearable gestural controllers. Federico Visi controls the quantum sound synthesiser with bespoke gestural controllers developed with UdK’s Wearable Computing team. Performed by Federico Visi (gestural controllers) & Eduardo Reck Miranda (Q1Synth software).
› Rever by Paulo Itaborai and Dino Vicente
Telematic electronic music. Live coding by Paulo Itaborai on stage generates quantum information, which is sonified by Dino Vicente operating vintage Moog analogue synthesisers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Performed by Paulo Itaborai (live coding) & Dino Vicente (Moog analogue synthesisers).
› Hexagonal Chambers by Pete Thomas and Paulo Itaborai
Performance with real-time sonification of data generated with quantum algorithms. Pete Thomas uses his own Zen sonification system to render the results from the Variational Quantum Harmonizer system operated by Paulo Itaborai. Performed by Pete Thomas, live coding of Zen sonification Paulo Itaborai (live coding of Variational Quantum Harmonizer).
› Mind the Qubits by Colin Harrington and Eduardo Reck Miranda
A duet for two performers wearing Brain-Computer Music Interfaces to control Q1Synth synthesisers with the power of their entrained minds. Performed by Colin Harrigton and Eduardo Reck Miranda, with Brain-Computer Music Interfaces.
Supported by Goethe-Institut, Studio Quantum, and Zeitgeist Irland 24. Zeitgeist Irland 24, an initiative of Culture Ireland and the Embassy of Ireland in Germany.
Recorded live in Berlin at Radialsystem (Saal) on 2 February 2024 by Zoe Kahlert
