Why I Wrote This Song
I wrote this song because every time I walk around the A-F-R-H, something inside me gets quiet in a good way.
Right in the middle of all the traffic, politics, sirens, and noise of Washington, D.C., there’s this beautiful stretch of land that Abraham Lincoln once used just to breathe.
He walked these same hills when the weight of a divided nation was on his shoulders.
Now we walk them with our own stories — veterans, widows, nurses, chaplains, and old soldiers still standing, just in different ways.
When I walk past the trees, the chapel, the porches, the green lawns, and the old brick buildings, I don’t just see a retirement home.
I see courage.
I see service.
I see people who gave their best years to this country and are still giving something every day just by being here.
This song is my thank-you.
It’s my way of saying that this place is sacred ground, even if it doesn’t look like a battlefield.
And it’s also my way of saying that I belong here — not because I’m perfect, but because I’m part of a community that understands what it means to keep going.
When I walk the A-F-R-H, I’m not just taking a stroll.
I’m walking through American history, faith, sacrifice, and friendship — all rolled into one beautiful, quiet place.
That’s why I wrote this song.
Because this home deserves to be sung about.
Thank you,
Bob Santero
