Wicken Fen the National Trust owned Land in Cambridgeshire England is one of those strange places in the UK that is not only a haven for wildlife and birds, but a place steeped in history and folklore.
This is a story of the Lantern Men, Will-o’-the-wisp, strange beings that are supposed to lurk in the mists and bogs of the Fens. People have been known to disappear while following the unusual and unexplained lights that often appear out of nowhere in the distance. Curiosity gets the better
Of most people who follow them to see what is causing them. There lies their mistake as the lantern men are calling, calling you to follow them often to a watery grave. For those who seek the answer, often fall victim to the soft marsh landscape, getting lost in the mist and stuck In the mud, never to be seen again.

Apart from the strange, eerie atmosphere of the Fens, the birdlife alone is worth a visit if ornithology is your passion, or maybe the atmosphere and windy conditions as the long grass waves in the breeze, singing along to the sounds of the flatlands. Visit the bird hides like Charlie’s hide, see the swallows and swifts dive around, take long walks along the waterways and look for a high point to get a better view. The fenland museum and Fensman’s home is fascinating, seeing how these tough old people managed to eek out a living on these ancient, unforgiving lands
Makes us think abut the comforts we enjoy today in our warm homes, with by all standards a very easy existence.

Wicken Fen is more than a day out, is a journey back in time when things were simpler but harder, a time where birds and wildlife continue their existence as they have done for hundreds of years. But If you do go check the map and remember, if you need to cross a stretch of water it may be a very long way around.
