By definition, a seiche is a standing wave oscillating in a body of water. 🌊 Lake Erie sees seiche events with sustained strong winds. When the wind blows hard on one end of the lake, water is pushed to the other side. Picture a seesaw - when one end is down, the other is up! Marinas and shorelines in Canada and New York saw lots of extra water while we watched an extra 40 yards of exposed beach appear before our eyes. Pay close attention to the time-lapse video between 9am and 5pm on Saturday, January 13. This is when you can plainly see the water levels fall and then begin to rise. The seiche peaked at Cedar Point NWR at about 2:30pm that day with a massive 7.5' water level drop. Since then, the bitter cold temperatures and negative wind chill helped to quickly freeze the shoreline.

From its rich history as a famous hunt club to becoming a refuge in 1964, Cedar Point National Wildlife Refuge's 2,675 acres have provided habitat for a variety of waterfowl, bald eagles and plants for many years. This largest undeveloped stretch of shoreline on Lake Erie is closed to public activity most of the year. Now you can view this gem anytime of day, anywhere you are!
