Visiting the village of Grazalema and the beautiful city of Córdoba - Spain

Описание: We have now reached the half way mark of this road trip. On Day 15 we explore the small village of Graazalema. White houses line steep streets with splashes of colour added by the purple flowering Jacaranda trees. The day was wet and chill but we were able to feel something of the character of this mountain village. Day 16 saw us turn north and a much warmer and sunnier stop in Cordoba.This city has an illustrious past. This former Roman colony later served as capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba, a renowned centre of Moorish culture and learning which for a time was the second largest city in Europe. At the heart of the city is the Mezquita. Built as a mosque this vast edifice was later converted to a Catholic Cathedral with the heart of the building replaced by a soaring Renaissance nave and transept. Sadly we could only admire from outside as the building was closed due to ongoing Easter events. A few steps from the Mezquita/Catwdral the wide Guadalquivir River is crossed by the long "Old Bridge". Old it certainly is with some parts still surviving from the 1st century BC. Some of the arches date from 2,000 years ago! Much though has been renewed over the centuries. A small castle sits at the southern end which helped control access to the city. As we explored we were to enjoy the lively maze of streets and to discover long sections of old defensive walls still surviving. The heart of Cordoba has World Heritage status.
