Today’s lesson explained the entire journey of electricity from the power station to the home. The goal was to help learners understand how electricity is generated, transmitted, reduced, and finally delivered safely into our houses.
---
1. Power Station – Where Electricity Begins
Electricity is first produced at the power station.
Mechanical energy (from turbines, steam, wind, or water) is converted into electrical energy.
This is the starting point of the electrical supply system.
The electricity leaving the power station is very high voltage.
---
2. First Substation – Voltage Is Increased
The electricity travels to the first substation.
Here, the voltage is increased (stepped up).
High voltage is necessary so electricity can travel long distances without losing energy.
This makes transmission more efficient.
---
3. Transmission Through Pylons
After the voltage is increased, the electricity moves along:
Tall pylons,
Overhead power lines.
These carry the high-voltage electricity for many kilometres across the country.
Pylons are used because they keep the dangerous high-voltage lines far above the ground for safety.
---
4. Second Substation – Voltage Is Decreased
When the electricity reaches the city, town, or consumer area, it goes into the second substation.
Here, the voltage is reduced (stepped down).
Lower voltage is safer and suitable for local distribution to homes and businesses.
---
5. Distribution Power Lines
From the second substation, the electricity travels through:
Distribution poles
Smaller power lines
These carry low-voltage electricity into neighbourhoods and streets.
---
6. Electrical Box (Distribution Board)
Before electricity enters the home, it passes through the electrical box outside or inside the house.
The distribution board regulates and distributes electricity safely into different circuits.
These circuits supply lights, plugs, stoves, geysers, and all appliances.
---
7. The Home – Final Energy Supply
Finally, electricity enters the home.
It powers:
Appliances
Lights
Heaters
TVs
All household electrical systems
This completes the journey of electrical energy from the power station to the home.

Simplified Flow Diagram (Exactly as You Taught It)
Power Station → First Substation (Voltage Increased) → Pylons & Power Lines →
Second Substation (Voltage Decreased) → Distribution Lines → Electrical Box → Home
