The Thirty years of Rind and Lashar war (1490-1518)
By Zakeer Baloch
The Thirty Years war was a bloody warfare fought between the two prominent Baloch tribes the Rind and Lashar over the period of 30 years from 1490 to 1518. The leader of the Rind tribe was Mir Chakar Khan Rind and the Lashar tribe was led by Mir Guhram Khan Lashari. Thousands of people from both the tribes were killed in this bloodshed. In the war, Rind had 40000 soldiers whereas Lashar had 45000 soldiers. 25 battles were fought between the two tribes out of which Rinds won 15 and Lasharies won 10. And a mass migration took place to Sindh and Punjab following the end of the war. This war ended with the defeat of the Lashar. In this piece of writing, causes and the historical aspects of the war shall be discussed.
Historically, Rind and Lashar were two sons of the 12th century great Baloch leader Mir Jalal Khan. Jalal Khan had four sons by the name of Rind, Lashar, Korai, Hoth and a daughter named jatti. From these children of Mir Jalal Khan five major Baloch tribes emerged. Basically, they were from Makuran. In the 15th century, Rind and Lashar conquered the ruler of newly emerging kalat state Mir Umer Mirwani. Since there were enough resources in Kalat, both the tribes migrated to Kachi giving the control of Kalat to Mir Chakar Khan's father-in-law Mir Gandwa. Upon their migration to Kachi, both tribes divided Kachi into two parts in order to avoid any conflict over the land. Eastern side of Kachi was given to Lasharies and the western side was given to Rinds over the agreement of both the tribes.
Now let's see what caused the war to take place. One of the causes was the land of Kachi. The western side of Kachi where Rinds inhabited was a fertile land due to which there was prosperity and Rind could graze their cattles. On the other hand, the land on which Lasharies lived was barren. Tribal supremacy was one of the biggest causes as both the tribes wanted to be better than each other. But, the biggest and most important cause of the thirty years was Guahar Jathi. Guahar Jathi was wealthy and one of the priest women in the Lashar Tribe. She had many cattles, camels, cows and other wealth. Once the tribal leader of Lashar Mir Guhram Khan went to Guahar Jathi and offered to marry her but she refused by saying you are like a brother to me and I will not marry you. Mir Guhram Khan really got angry but he didn't do anything. Upon seeing his intentions of marriage Guahar started feeling feared by Mir. Therefore, she decides to take asylum from Mir Chakar Khan Rind by taking her cattles, camels and cows to his refuge. Chakar Rind gave her asylum over Balochi code of conduct 'BAHOT". Though it was against Mir Guhram Khan, he didn't respond to it. Everything went well for a long period of time.
Once Mir Guhram Khan Lashari along with his son Ramin Lashari were guests of the Rinds. They decided on a horse riding competition between Rind and Lashar. On behalf of the Lashar, Ramin Lashari was the contestant and Rehan Rind was playing on the behalf of the Rind. When the competition took place, Ramin Lashari won the competition but Rinds declared Rehan Rind as the winner. Ramin felt really humiliated and considered it a humiliation to all the Lashar. He promised to avenge the humiliation. After the competition the Lasharies looted and killed the calves, cattles and cows of Guahar Jathi. Mir Chakar Khan Rind asked them to return the possession but they refused. Upon refusal Mir Chakar Khan decided to go on war with the Lasharies. This is where the war started.
The first war between the two was fought in the Nali River. Mir Chakar Khan Rind badly lost that war and it became a scar on his honor. Since Lashar had the support of anti-chakar and Sindhis, therefore he was successful in defeating Chakar Khan in the first war. And Mir Chakar Khan Rind realized the need of foreign forces in order to win the war. That's why he decided to take help from the Turkish help in Herat. But before his arrival, Mir Guhram Khan Lashari approached the Turkish ruler in Herat with costly gifts and Mir Chakar's hope of taking help diminished. Upon seeing the bravery of Mir Chakar Khan Rind, the mother of the Turkish ruler ordered her son to help him. So this gave a boost to Rinds to win more and more wars. On the other hand, Lashar was already getting demoralized. Rind defeated Lashar in battles like the battle of Gori, Dabani and Gajjan with the help of foreign forces. And it went on. Finally, after the exhaustion of 30 years of war Lashar started migrating to Sindh and Punjab. Later, Mir Chakar Khan Rind also left Balochistan and migrated to Multan, Punjab. This war had very horrible consequences such as the mass migration, thousands of deaths, disunity of Baloch, losing of power. Both the tribes gained nothing but failures.
