Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!

This week I have the Spring Fever commission, the beginning of mosaic classes. I'm not sure what I'll work on, but I have lots of options.

1:32 I start with my demo project for class. We will be covering shade and shadow on rounded objects. I start by sealing the wood cradle board with 50/50 Weldbond/water solutions. Once that is dry, I transfer the image of an orange to my substrate using carbon paper and a ball point pen.
2:42 I have taken my orange photo and divided it into 5 tonal zones. Then I have taken the glass I have available and made a value scale, dividing it into 5 zones.
2:57 I start with zone 2, then move to zone 3, zone 4 and zone 5 (the highlight.) Zone 1 is the very darkest zone, which is the shadow.
4:22 I evaluate the orange and show what area I want to change.
5:26 I spritz water on the part I want to change and begin to pry off the pieces. They come up pretty easily as the glue has not set up all the way.
7:12 I work on the commission spring fever piece, custom cutting glass as I go, which is a much slower process than the beginning.
8:28 I am getting close to the end of this project, but there is still plenty of work to do. At this point, I like to view the mosaic at a low angle, so that I can't see the gaps and I can make sure I am achieving the look that I am going for. I continue to fill in the spaces with custom cut glass shards.
