Luoyang Guanghua Temple is located on the western ridge of Longmen Mountain.It was originally founded in the Northern Wei Dynasty and is one of the“Eight Temples of Longmen.”In the first year of the Qianyuan era of the Tang Dynasty(758 AD),it was rebuilt into a temple from the former Shiwuwei Stupa Courtyard at the request of Guo Ziyi.As the ancestral temple of the Yoga Esoteric Buddhism,the temple now has a complex of Qing-style buildings.Along the central axis are distributed the mountain gate,the Hall of the Heavenly Kings,and other structures.In front of the temple stands a grand staircase of 199 steps.The temple's iconic structure,the Shiwuwei Master Stupa,commemorates the Indian monk Shiwuwei.The Tang Dynasty Kaiyuan Three Gentlemen Memorial Hall,which enshrines the“Three Great Gentlemen of Kaiyuan,”is a testament to the cultural exchanges between China and India,as well as China and Japan.In 1988,the Japanese Shingon sect erected the“Shiwuwei Sanzang Memorial Stele,”with the inscription and temple name written by Zhao Puchu.The temple is open to the public for free throughout the year.It is located near the Longmen Grottoes and is an ideal place for a quiet exploration of history and religious culture.
