Guangsheng Temple in Hongtong County is located at the southern foot of Huo Mountain, 15 kilometers northeast of Hongtong County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is one of the first batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. It was first built in the first year of Jianhe in the Eastern Han Dynasty (147 AD), originally named Julushe Temple, also known as Ashoka Stupa Courtyard. In the 4th year of Dali in the Tang Dynasty (769 AD), Guo Ziyi, the Prince of Fenyang, petitioned for its reconstruction and renamed it Guangsheng Temple, meaning "vast as the sky, famous in the times". The temple was destroyed by wars in the Song and Jin Dynasties and earthquakes in the Yuan Dynasty, then rebuilt. The existing buildings include the Feihong Pagoda and Mahavira Hall in the Upper Temple, which are relics of the Ming Dynasty, while most of the others are Yuan Dynasty buildings. It consists of three parts: the Upper Temple, the Lower Temple and the Water God Temple.
The Upper Temple is located on the top of Huo Mountain. The core building, Feihong Pagoda, is the most well-preserved colorful glazed pagoda in China, with a height of 47.31 meters. It is an octagonal pavilion-style 13-story brick pagoda, inlaid with yellow, green and blue glazed components, with rich and diverse patterns. When the sun shines on it, it looks like a flying rainbow. The scene of "sweeping the pagoda to distinguish injustice" in the 1986 version of "Journey to the West" was filmed here; the Mituo Hall behind the pagoda once housed the "Zhao Cheng Jin Zang", a Jin Dynasty engraved Tripitaka, which is a treasure in Buddhist scriptures and is now collected in the National Library of China.
The Lower Temple is located at the southern foot of Huo Mountain and the north side of Huo Spring. Its Mituo Hall is a Yuan Dynasty wooden building. The five-bay hall is supported by only two columns, with a unique and rare structure; the Mingying King Hall in the adjacent Water God Temple retains 217 square meters of Yuan Dynasty murals, among which the opera mural "Da Xing San Le Zhong Du Xiu Performs Here" is a precious physical evidence for the study of Yuan Dynasty zaju. Guangsheng Temple is known as the "Three Wonders" for Feihong Pagoda, "Zhao Cheng Jin Zang" and the murals of the Water God Temple, and is an important site for studying Yuan and Ming architecture and religious culture.
