Released in 1983, Life Among Stars (星々の中の生命) marks the final album from Phantasia’s original trio before expanding into a full band. Following Call of Ethernity, where Keiko Arai made her first appearance, lending her voice to the final track. This album represents the trio’s last exploration of Japan’s evolving jazz fusion sound before embarking on a new era.

During the making of this album, Keiko had already become a close friend of the band, frequently joining their jam sessions. When she saw the early sketches for the cover art, it immediately reminded her of the work of a good friend, Akira Matsuda. Not only was Akira a talented visual artist, but he also had a deep understanding of music, making his connection with Phantasia almost instant. Enthralled by the band’s evolving sound and aesthetics, Akira began sketching different interpretations of the celestial figure depicted on the album cover, eventually laying the groundwork for what would become the Future Angels concept.

With Life Among Stars, the trio delivered their final statement before stepping into a new chapter. After its release, the band’s chemistry with Keiko and Akira was undeniable, and they soon became official members, ushering in a new era of Phantasia.

Fun Fact:
Fans of Call of Ethernity might recognize "The River" as the original version of Moonlight on the River, While the Call of Ethernity version transformed it into a smooth and sensual electronic ballad, this earlier rendition reveals its pure jazz roots. With its modal progressions and gradual, intricate build up, it captures the trio’s signature interplay, embodying the raw, evolving energy that made their live performances unforgettable.
