In 2013, upgrades to Sand Bar Dam on the Middle Fork Stanislaus River required a reliable dewatering system. AquaDams® were selected as the cofferdam solution. A 16-ft tall, 320-ft long double closed end (DCE) AquaDam® served as the primary barrier, supported by a 10-ft tall single closed end (SCE) unit downstream and smaller 2.5-ft and 5-ft SCE units placed beneath and at the bank to fill riverbed voids and improve sealing on the rocky substrate.

Divers removed large boulders to prepare the uneven riverbed, ensuring proper contact. The AquaDams® were carefully unrolled, positioned, and filled using ropes, rigging, and controlled pumping to manage hydraulic head and alignment. Additional anchoring, protective measures, and interstitial tubing enhanced stability and seepage control. Once fully pressurized and sealed against the banks, pumps dewatered the enclosed work zone, enabling safe construction along the riverbank with minimal environmental impact.
