Social Proof is the psychological phenomenon where people adopt or mirror the actions of people around them in order to adopt the correct or right behavior in any given social situation. People assume that celebrities, friends, and family know more about social situations than we do. This is why we adopt actions that we see performed by others, and that’s why social proof is so powerful.
There’s more than one kind of social proof. Some popular examples include Kanye’s infamous MTV takeover in 2009. When Taylor Swift won best female music video of the year Kanye stole the show by storming the stage and proclaiming that Beyonce had one of the best music videos of all time. This event caused years of beef between Taylor Swift and Kanye, which caused both artists to gain even more popularity.
Businesses also use social proof to sell their products. An example would be Air Jordan’s new deal with Zion Williamson. Williamson is a young athlete who’s been drafted into the NBA, and the Air Jordan shoe brand is buying your attention by signing him to an exclusive deal in hopes that basketball lovers will buy their shoes.
We even saw the stock market affected by social proof. Banning together and the power of social proof was revealed through the Robinhood and Gamestop incident. The public banned together to purchase GameStop and sway the price of the stock for the better. Bandwagon social proof is proven to work, and we witnessed that as the stock increased dramatically.
