According to the deleted scenes/alternative opening on my two disc special edition of Mulan (okay I'm bragging here), I learned that one idea to start the film off was a subplot where Mulan was actually engaged to Shang and that's how they first met. So I took this idea and ran with it.
Storyline: Mulan is engaged to Shang, who she barely knows and doesn't love. War threatens their engagement for the time being when Shang goes off to command his army. Deciding to fight for her father, Mulan dresses up as a man and joins the army and what would you know that the one army she chose happened to belong to Shang. Through her disguise as a soldier, Mulan gets to know Shang better and even falls in love with him, but her secret threatens to tear their friendship apart...
