In episode 5 of my 12-day solo bike tour across western Montana, I venture north out of Whitefish onto a series of winding, dirt forest roads filled with mud puddles from recent rains. Despite the messy terrain, the ride through the forest is absolutely stunning, with scenic views and a peaceful stop at Upper Stillwater Lake.
As I continue the journey, I pedal past the calm waters of Dickey Lake and get incredibly close to the U.S./Canada border—feeling that unique thrill of being right on the edge of two countries. Later, I turn west and find a perfect spot to camp for free in the forest at the Tobacco River Campground, completely surrounded by nature and solitude.
