Hot on the heels of my build of the Napier 2 cylinder marine engine is this 1844 2 cylinder direct-action horizontal screw engine enabling placement beneath the waterline. Fitted to HMS Amphion it was built by Miller, Ravenhill & Co., using a design by John Ericsson.
This was a relatively easy model to build since it is quite simple and the May 1934 Meccano magazine photograph shows all relevant details.
It runs well and the only issue is that the crossheads are (inevitably) wearing a bit of paint off the slide bars. It’s a small price to pay for such an attractive model. If a steam engine has character then this one looks “enthusiastic” to me. Note that I am running it much slower than the prototype would run - driving a screw rather than a paddle.
