For my latest model I returned to the excellent 1934 Meccano Magazine series (March - August) on Marine engine history. This is a 2 cylinder simple reciprocating engine and as usual, one picture and some rudimentary instructions are all you have to go on. The dreaded phrase “construction will be obvious from the photographs” occurs a couple of times.
After doing a bit of research and (I think) identifying the prototype, I decide to use this as a guide to make the model, so little of the original magazine model design remains. I suspect it was almost unbuildable as described because close examination of the photo reveals a bit of “M C Escher” work where the condenser fits at the back of the frame uprights.
The build was very satisfying and the model runs well. It’s quite small, but represents a large prototype with 84 inch diameter cylinders. Two examples were built by Robert Napier in 1866 and fitted to steam liners; Pereire and Ville de Paris for transatlantic service.
