W.B. Yeats is a poet of development. The poet’s art reveals that development. This course follows the development of Yeats as a lyric poet. Across five weeks we will study his entire collection of lyric poetry, from his juvenalia to the poems written just before his death. While there is value in reading isolated lyric poems in an anthology, there is even greater value in studying lyric poems within the collections in which they were published. Students will learn to read lyric poems as parts of a larger whole, the same way the rooms of an art museum are carefully curated to tell a larger story, or the same way that heavenly bodies are points of light within a larger constellation.
Students gain two important skills:
1) How to trace the development of Yeats across the long arc of his career, i.e., to see how the collections of poetry speak to one another;
2) And how to read each collection of poetry as a whole, i.e., to see how the poems within collections speak to one another.
