Footage of 2019 MCI D4500CT bus 19095 operating on NJ Transit's Route 196 between Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC to Warwick, NY. The 196 is a super express variant of the 197 with no stops between Port Authority and Ringwood Park & Ride. Buses use the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), Interstate 80, Garden State Parkway, NJ-208, and Interstate 287 in both directions. Once the bus gets off I-287 onto Skyline Drive, it travels through predominantly rural terrain. Skyline Drive travels through forest, with some residential parts along the way. While this type of service area would normally hinder a routes success, the 196 route serves many of the regions villages and residential areas while also making it accessible through multiple park & ride stops. It is also the only public transit option in the area.

North of Ringwood Park & Ride, buses run along Greenwood Lake Turnpike. The route operates alongside the Wanaque Reservoir. It also travels both alongside and across the Monksville Reservoir. Unlike the 197, the 196 skips the residential and commercial portion of West Milford, only serving the Park & Ride. This helps save even more time for riders, especially those traveling north of the state line. By the time the 196 serves the Park & Ride, it starts running near Greenwood Lake, which is the case for the rest of the route in New Jersey. The route turns north alongside the lake in Hewitt. Several miles later, the 196 enters New York State once again, this time into Orange County.

Upon crossing the state line, buses run through the hamlet of Sterling Forest. Lakeside Road becomes Jersey Avenue, which the 196 travels on until reaching the village of Greenwood Lake. The route operates through the village and then leaves headed northwest along NY State Route 17A towards Warwick. The route is very windy between Greenwood Lake and Bellvale due to the path of Route 17A. The bus then hits Warwick Park, where the Park & Ride is situated, just before entering the village of Warwick. Then the route heads north towards the village center, headed via South Street and terminating at Oakland Ave & Orchard Street. Buses to NYC head down Oakland Avenue to Galloway Road.
