Thanks to Rich Markow, San Antonio, TX for such an exceptional copy of this disc, which enables us to hear Morse’s guitar playing in great clarity.
Though she is much better known for her later hot recordings, some of the most interesting pieces of Lee Morse’s discography are the solo sides she made as a vocalist accompanying herself on the guitar. Indeed her earliest recordings for Pathe were made in this context. Her “Mail Man Blues,” was the first recording of a blues song by a woman accompanying themself on the guitar, no small feat in any genre. She was later filmed playing it in the 1930 soundie short “A Million Me’s,” showing her preference for this piece in her repertoire and its longevity.
