“Existence is pain.” Yeah, so what?
Boogiepop Phantom, a philosophical horror anime from 2000 and this video essay’s topic for analysis, centers around the stories of teenagers struggling with age; are adults happy? Is the best behind them already? As we grow into new responsibilities, our experiences do dilute, joy and pain alike dulling in their effect; it’s simply harder to be happy as a grown up… right? This is what the Boogiepop Phantom anime presents (the philosophy of Poom Poom), and then outright rejects. There’s an incomplete philosophy, a single line, that helps lead us into these worse places; existence is pain. Yes, life can be hard, life can suck, it can feel meaningless and so short, but we have to say “what next” to all of these because happiness is not a choice, but the first step to being happy is a choice, to keep the possibility alive because change is inevitable. That incomplete idea persists because sometimes it's easier to be unhappy. But, let’s discuss and analyze this in a bit more depth.
