Are you experiencing black gums or gum inflammation? It could be due to a metal allergy. Up to 80% of women have a metal allergy, and this can manifest in the mouth as gingivitis or inflammation that does not go away with brushing and flossing. If you have a porcelain fused metal crown, this could also be the cause of the black line at your gum line. The solution is simple - switch to metal-free dentistry, which is more biocompatible and less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Don't suffer with gum inflammation any longer - visit Dr. Mark McOmie of McOmie Family Dentistry to explore your options for metal-free dentistry and get relief from your gum issues.

I'm Dr. Mark McOmie of McOmie Family Dentistry. A question that I receive frequently is, why are my gums black? And what does that - oftentimes you'll see somebody and they have a black line at their gum, right at the gingiva. And what that often is, is the metal from a porcelain fused a metal crown there.
But more frequently and something that people don't realize is a metal allergy. Do you know that up to 80% of women have a metal allergy? Oftentimes We don't think of that in terms of dentistry, but if you can't wear an earring that's not gold or surgical stainless steel, how can you take a metal and cement it in your mouth and not think you're going to have allergic reaction? Allergic reactions in your mouth look kind of weird. The gums will be very red. They're inflamed, they'll bleed. Oftentimes, no matter how much you brush and floss around a dental restoration that has metal in it, you can't get that gingivitis to go away. You see that black line? That can be a metal allergy as well.
The solution is simple. We can switch the metal in your dentistry to metal free dentistry. It's more biocompatible and people aren't nearly as allergic to it. It's very infrequent that somebody is allergic to just a straight ceramic. And so we can cure that metal allergy and make you happy and make your gum go back to normal and quit bleeding. Every time you brush or you floss it.
