🎥 Video Transcript: I was asked a question today where a patient asked me, well, my tooth doesn't hurt. Why do I need a filling? Well, that sounds kind of fun - kind of a funny question, but it's a good question. Teeth have - you need a filling because there's a cavity. Now, a cavity is a general term. Just means a hole. Sometimes that cavity can be from abfraction where the tooth flexes and a piece of the tooth fell out. It may be a smooth void in the tooth, but it's not decay. We can put a filling in in that situation.

Decay is the other reason why we do fillings. And decay comes from certain bacteria that eat a carbohydrate. They excrete acid. That acid demineralizes the tooth and causes the decay. So what we do when we do a filling is we take that decay out and then we fill that tooth so that there is no longer a porosity or a pit in it to get into another cavity.

Even though it may not hurt, that could prevent it from hurting later, or it will prevent it from hurting later in many circumstances. So just because your tooth doesn't hurt is no reason not to get a filling done.
