I had to start over on this pattern welded seax project. The first build turned into a three inch knife because I started with billets that were too thin.
In this video you see:
• The new pattern welded seax billet setup
• Why I switched away from a wrought iron spine on this build
• The layer stack I used and how I forged it
• What went wrong when the billet burned and started to delaminate
• How I tried to save the billet and keep enough material for a full seax
• A real look at how frustrating back to back problem builds can be
Build details:
• Seax inspired by historical pattern welded examples
• Original build, wrought iron spine, 9 layer high carbon and wrought twist, more wrought, 1085 edge with wolf tooth pattern
• New build, limited use of wrought iron to save stock for future commissions
• Reused 10 layer billet from an older project, lost material to a burn and delamination during forge welding
• Goal, finish a solid working seax and correct the mistakes from the first attempt
If you are learning bladesmithing, you will see why billet thickness matters and how fast a knife can shrink when you start too thin.
