Mayon Volcano Eruption in early 2018
Legazpi City, Capital of the province of Albay in the Philippines. Population of 200 000. Evacuation zone of 6 km is in effect.
Since Mayon's first recorded eruption, in 1616, it has erupted about 58 times. Since the 2006 eruption killing at least 1,266 people, this is the 5th eruption
The city is used to evacuation, death and danger. Locals and tourists perished in previous years from volcano flash floods, lava flow, heat, hot rocks and debris, ash columns & fall, gas (sulfur dioxide), smoke, pyroclastic flows, lahars from the volcanic ash and boulders eruption, landslides and mudslides. Japan helps Legazpi to be better prepared and also test theories of disaster area evacuation and response.
Earthquake, Typhoon and Tsunami are also common to the area.Typhoon Basyang / Tropical Storm Sanba killled 14 people in February 2018. Affected tens of thousands of locals and tourists and total damages were at PHP 167.955 million (US$3.36 million).
