Preparations underway in Dehradun for Jhanda Mela, iron flagstaff to mark major change in tradition

Dehradun is set to host the annual Jhanda Mela at Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, commemorating the 380th birth anniversary of Guru Ram Rai Ji, eldest son of Guru Har Rai Ji. This year, the traditional towering Sal wood flagstaff will be replaced with an iron one to conserve trees and comply with Uttarakhand government restrictions. Devotees expressed support for the change, while the ceremonial flag hoisting continues with multiple cloth covers as per tradition. The fair also features improved facilities, cleanliness, and accommodation for pilgrims. Thousands are expected to participate in the spiritual celebrations, keeping alive a 350-year-old legacy of devotion, faith, and community participation.
