The Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Exposure (ABCDE) approach is a systematic approach to assessing and treating critically ill or injured patients.
The ABCDE approach involves performing the initial assessment and treatment concurrently and continuously. Even when a critical condition is obvious, the cause may be elusive; in such cases, life-saving treatment must be initiated prior to obtaining a definitive diagnosis.
The approach is widely accepted by emergency medicine experts and is likely to improve outcomes by assisting health care professionals in focusing on the most life-threatening clinical problems.
