Drifting the South Fork Eel River | Redwoods Humboldt Co

Описание: A drift boat trip on the South Fork of the Eel River along the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County. The river seemed like it would be primed for fall run chinook salmon fishing with the river hovering around 900 cfs and after an earlier rain.    • Eel River Steelhead & Salmon Fishing   However, when we arrived in the middle of November, the river color was more brown than green. We surmised there must be a mud slide somewhere up river that was dumping silt into the river. We decided to do a quick drift from Gould Bar to Leatherwood near Honeydew off the Redwood Highway to see if there were any fish in the river or signs of life. We deployed our array of Kwikfish K15s, but didn't see any fish role, splash or jump at the top of our drift where we knew they would be based on our past experiences along this stretch of river. As we got closer to the take out, we did see one fish come to the surface. We think it was a coho salmon. Note: The Eel River is catch and release fishing.

Accessing this type of fishing typically requires a river guide, as you can float past redwood trees, groves and creeks while fishing. The South Fork Eel River offers year-round opportunities for steelhead, trout, and salmon. The best time for salmon is late October to December, and for winter steelhead is late November to March, with peak activity in January. The area around the Dyerville Bridge is within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park and fishing is permitted in the South Fork and main stem of the Eel River in the fall and winter. Check your regulations and North Coast low flow river closures for more info. Low Flow River Closures begin Sept. 1 and run through April 30, 2026.
