Why are suicides increasing among Hong Kong students?

Student suicides are on the rise in Hong Kong, where the 2024 suicide rate for those aged 15-24 was more than 34 per cent higher than it was in 2019. Experts have identified family, school and social life as primary sources of stress. The Hong Kong Student Alliance on Student Suicide has been pushing for a re-examination of the education system, social atmosphere and support mechanisms, as well as efforts to ensure student voices are reflected in policymaking.
