Model History
The Acclaim was the last model to bear the Triumph name and the first car built by the Austin/Rover group after entering into an alliance with Honda.
They were manufactured at the Cowley plant in Oxford between 1981-1984. It quickly gained a reputation for reliability and build quality and apparently held the record for the lowest percentage of warranty claims for a BL car.
The Honda version was called the Ballade.
They all had a 1335 cc engine and You could get a 5 speed manual or a 3 speed automatic.
The model range consisted of L, HL,HLS and the top of the range CD
If you wanted something just that extra special you could order an Avon Acclaim ,the conversion was carried out by Avon coachbuilders of Warwick. I remember when they were released and they really were something special. They had Connolly leather seats, leather doors panels and dashtop, a burr walnut dashboard and door capping’s and I think Wilton carpets and extra soundproofing.
The exterior had a chrome plated grille and 2 tone paint, colour coded wheels and a vinyl roof. The conversion cost £1365.
Avon also went on to produce a Turbo model with a turbo technics conversion.
