A low, wheel-mounted gun sits on a pad of hard ground, tipped onto one wheel like a makeshift turntable. The order says “ready,” the inspection distance is marked, and the next round is logged before anyone can claim it was improvised.
In 1940–1942, Britain faced a practical crisis: coastal and airfield defenses expanded faster than standard anti-tank guns could be produced and issued. Home Guard units needed something countable, distributable, and usable at short range against armor when regular equipment was prioritized elsewhere.
This weapon solved procurement speed by cutting complexity. A smooth-bore 3-inch barrel fired low-velocity rounds, including shaped-charge anti-tank bombs, from an unconventional carriage that had to be tipped into position. On paper it offered coverage and full traverse; in practice it demanded level ground, strict drill, and dependable fuses. Failures in handling stability and ammunition reliability produced accidents and formal safety action, including withdrawals in some units.
