Before becoming one of the Monkees, Davy Jones was an actor and had made records of his own. From his self-titled 1965 album on Colpix Records, here is "Theme For A New Love (I Saw You Only Once)." It was one of seven songs recorded during the first of two back-to-back sessions with Henry Levine as arranger on July 26, 1965. It wasn't released on a single until after September, when it was used as the B-side on Colpix CP-789 with "The Girl From Chelsea," a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King that David Gates produced and arranged on September 25 using completely different musicians (other than guitarist Al Casey) than Henry Levine had used in July. Levine had 22 musicians and among them were drummer Earl Palmer, guitarists Al Casey, Tommy Tedesco, Carol Kaye and Bill Pitman, pianist Gene Garf and bass player George Callender. Emil Radocchia played the mallets and there were two horn players and a ten-piece string section. "Theme for A New Love" and "The Girl From Chelsea" appeared on the same side of an Astor label extended play single opposite "Dream Girl" and "Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner." Both of those were on Davy's aforementioned album, and the latter was from the second session on July 26.
When The Monkees were formed, their first recording session involved Leon Russell as the arranger for Snuff Garrett, but those recordings were scrapped due to differences concerning the vocalist.
